UNVERIFIED: WhatsApp messages claim NYSC camps will shut this week

Rumour desk — this has not been confirmed. Read it as a circulating claim, not as a fact.

A police terror alert is real. A nationwide camp closure is not — at least not on any order this newsroom has seen. Do not act on the blast until NYSC says so.

A message circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook this afternoon claims the National Youth Service Corps has ordered all orientation camps shut immediately because of the police terror alert. Screenshots use official-looking letterheads. Several parents have already called camp officials in a panic.

Here is what is confirmed: the Nigeria Police Force did issue a nationwide alert on 13 September about possible attacks on schools, worship centres and NYSC camps. That document is real. It tells commanders to harden security. It does not, in the copy obtained by this newspaper, order camps to close or corpers to go home.

NYSC has not published a shutdown directive as of this evening. State coordinators who spoke to the desk said they had been told to increase patrols and restrict visitors, not to empty the hostels.

If a closure comes, it will come on NYSC’s letterhead, on its verified channels, and we will report it as news. Until then, treat the blast as a rumour riding on a real alert. Forwarding it helps the people who want chaos, not the people in the camp.
