UNVERIFIED: Social posts say the 2027 election will be postponed

Rumour desk — this has not been confirmed. Read it as a circulating claim, not as a fact.

“No vacancy in Aso Rock” is a campaign line. It is not an INEC timetable. The commission has not shifted the polls.

Within hours of the Oba of Lagos saying there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock,” posts began circulating that the 2027 general election would be postponed, cancelled, or turned into a referendum on a longer term. Some used mocked-up INEC graphics. Some quoted “a source in the Villa.”

INEC has published no such decision. The Electoral Act still points at a cycle, not a pause. Palace poetry is not a gazette.

Nigeria has a habit of turning a loud sentence into a constitutional crisis before breakfast. Do not help. If the commission changes dates, it will say so in a signed statement, and every serious desk — including this one — will lead with it.

Until then: it is a rumour. File it next to the ones that said there would be no 2015, no 2019, no 2023. Those elections happened. The shouting did not.
