The rock, the race, and a country that cannot live on slogans
“No vacancy” is a powerful line. It is not a governing programme.

Oba Akiolu is entitled to his politics. Lagos is entitled to its king. The All Progressives Congress is entitled to collect blessings on its way out of town. None of that converts a slogan into an argument.
“No vacancy in Aso Rock” will be repeated until it is a meme, a rally chant and, if the president’s people are lucky, a frame for the next year. Frames are not facts. The facts are the ones households already know: the price of food, the reliability of light, the safety of a road at night, the dignity of a young person who did everything right and still cannot find work that matches the effort.
Incumbency is a record, not a relic. If the administration wishes to be returned, it should campaign on what it has done and what it will finish — not on the idea that the seat is already spoken for. Voters are not tenants in someone else’s house. They are the landlords.
There is also a tone problem. Royal declarations of political destiny sit poorly in a republic that has spent decades trying to make ballots matter more than thrones. Tradition can bless a candidate. It should not pre-empt a count.
This newspaper will cover the palace, the Villa and the opposition with the same standard: claims need evidence, crowds need counting, and every “no vacancy” should be followed by a question about rent, rice and the grid.
A palace can declare that the chair is taken. The country will decide whether the chair has been used well.
