Police put Nigeria on red alert over planned attacks on schools, churches and NYSC camps

The Nigeria Police Force has placed formations nationwide on red alert after intelligence indicated increased mobilisation of terrorist elements for possible coordinated attacks on places of worship, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other soft targets, a wireless message dated 13 September shows.

The order, issued from the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters in Abuja and marked for every zone, mobile unit and state command, also reported the movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State. Officers were told to treat the traffic as a live threat, not a rumour.

Police said suspected ISWAP operatives and local collaborators have been conducting surveillance on potential targets. The Force is particularly worried about the resumption of the 2026/2027 academic session, when classrooms fill again, and about NYSC camps where thousands of corps members sleep in the open.

The same assessment links the timing to the long road to the 2027 elections: a mass-casualty attack on a church, a school or a camp would be designed to frighten communities and steal the political year. That is a theory of motive, not a completed plot. It is still enough to put rifles at gates.
