INEC’s candidate lists will freeze the 2027 field
Once the commission publishes who is actually on the ballot, the rumour mill loses its favourite toy — and the lawyers pick up theirs.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to publish the final lists of candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections in the coming days, closing a season of substitutions, court skirmishes and WhatsApp speculation.
Lists do two things. They tell the country who is real. And they start the clock on the litigation that always follows. Every party has a disappointed aspirant with a lawyer and a press statement. INEC’s paper will not end those fights; it will simply give them a date stamp.
For the presidential race, the list is the first hard look at whether the opposition has a single viable name or a crowded field that splits the anti-incumbent vote. Party officials in Abuja spent the weekend insisting their paperwork is clean. The commission will be the judge of that.
Voters, for now, should treat every “exclusive” about a last-minute swap as unverified until it appears on INEC’s portal.
